Scope and Content Maltings block from south-east, Glenlochy Distillery, Fort William, Highland Glenlochy Distillery was built in the 1890s next to the River Nevis, and used water power in its early years. It was bought in 1953 by the Distillers Company Ltd, and distillery housing erected (which has now been converted to a guest house). The site lost its link to the rail network in the 1970s, and was closed in 1983. This shows the brick-built maltings block with its distinctive pagoda vents and the boiler house chimney (far right). On the left are the bonded warehouses with their decorative ridge tiles. The warehouse block is 12 bays long, divided by brick pilasters framing low windows with smaller louvred vents above. Whisky is stored in bonded (locked) warehouses until it has matured. This must be over three years, but many casks are left for up to 20 years. During this time, about 2% of the alcohol in a barrel is lost through evaporation each year, a loss which is known as 'the angel's share'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
