Scope and Content Tun room, still house and spirit store from south-east, Glenlochy Distillery, Fort William, Highland Glenlochy Distillery was built in the 1890s next to the River Nevis, and used water power in its early years. It was bought in 1953 by the Distillers Company Ltd, and distillery housing erected (which has now been converted to a guest house). The site lost its link to the rail network in the 1970s, and was closed in 1983. This shows, from left to right, the tun room (where malted barley was mixed with water in a mash tun), still house with its tall chimney (where the wash from the fermentation process was distilled into unmatured whisky), and the spirit store (where the whisky is stored before being put into casks) with its terracotta ridge tiles and oculus (eye-shaped) vent in the end gable. A change in the height of the still house walls (visible in the brickwork) probably indicates an alteration in the height of the stills within at some stage in the distillery's history. The shape of the copper pot stills used for distillation (even down to individual dents and faults in the metalwork) is said to affect the taste and quality of the finished whisky.
