Scope and Content Tun room from north, Glen Grant Distillery, Rothes, Moray Glen Grant Distillery was established in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant. A second distillery, called Glen Grant No 2 was built over the road in 1898 (closed 1902), linked to the original premises by a 'whisky pipe' over the road. The original distillery produces a single malt which is used as part of the Famous Grouse blend, and is the best selling malt whisky in Italy. This shows eight large wooden vessels called 'washbacks' in the tun room. These are used to ferment the cooled wort (malt sugars) from the mashing stage into a strong beer-like mixture known as 'wash' by the addition of yeast. The mixture froths up in the washbacks, and is contained by the removable wooden covers. The wash from the mashing and brewing stages is then distilled by heating it in large copper stills until the alcohol vaporizes. After passing through a condenser, the heart of the clear spirit run is put into oak casks. Maturation for three years or more in bonded (locked) warehouses gives the whisky its golden colour and distinctive taste. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
