Scope and Content Still house from west-north-west, Glen Grant Distillery, Rothes, Moray Glen Grant Distillery was established in 1840 by brothers John and James Grant. A second distillery, called Glen Grant No 2 was built over the road in 1898 (closed 1902), linked to the original premises by a 'whisky pipe' over the road. The original distillery produces a single malt which is used as part of the Famous Grouse blend, and is the best selling malt whisky in Italy. This shows the still house with its row of eight copper pot stills above coal-fired boilers. All but two of these were made by A Forsyth of Rothes, and until recently boasted the last rummagers (mixing devices within the stills) powered by a waterwheel in Scotland. Each still has a copper purifier attached to its 'lyne arm' which takes the vapour to the condenser. The condensed spirit is then placed in a holding tank, put into barrels, and rolled to the warehouses to be left to mature for at least three years. During maturation about 2% of the spirit is lost due to evaporation, a loss which is known as the 'angel's share'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
