Scope and Content Pictish cross-slab, Fowlis Wester, Perthshire This cross-slab had been built into the fabric of the 13th-century church, so the carving is well preserved. It is only carved on one side and depicts a ring-headed cross on a splayed base, decorated with interlace, spirals and key-pattern. Other motifs include Jonah being swallowed by the whale, two clerics on chairs, the left chairback being animal-headed and two standing figures in decorative robes. There are no Pictish symbols on this cross-slab. Influenced by Northumbrian craftsmen and inspired by manuscripts and metalwork, the Picts carved the most intricate patterns. Interlaces, key-patterns and spiral patterns were similar to those found in The Book of Kells. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
