Scope and Content Arbroath Station, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. Its station was rebuilt in 1911 by the Dundee & Arbroath Joint Railway. This shows the passenger station from the north-east end of the south-bound platform, with the north-bound island platform, and the west goods yard, on the right. To the left is the site of the former east goods yard, probably closed in the mid-1960s. The Dundee & Arbroath Railway was joint between the North British Railway and the Caledonian Railway, which used it to run through trains from Dundee to Forfar, with connections to Aberdeen. This Arbroath station was the Joint line's largest and finest. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
