Scope and Content Arbroath Station, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. Its station was rebuilt in 1911 by the Dundee & Arbroath Joint Railway. This shows the single south-bound platform, looking north-east. Note the large glazed awning and waiting rooms, with a bookstall, then a common feature of railway stations. On the left is the north-bound island platform. The Dundee & Arbroath Railway was joint between the North British Railway and the Caledonian Railway, which used it to run through trains from Dundee to Forfar, with connections to Aberdeen. This Arbroath station was the Joint line's largest and finest. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
