Scope and Content Arbroath Station, Angus Arbroath was second only to Dundee as the principal industrial centre in Angus. Its principal industry was the making of sailcloth and flax canvas, but it also had a notable engineering industry, as well as its renowned fishing and boatbuilding trades. Its station was rebuilt in 1911 by the Dundee & Arbroath Joint Railway. This shows the station from the single south-bound platform, looking north to the island platform on the north-bound side. Note the lavish provision of glazed awnings and waiting rooms. The van on the left is in the goods yard. The Dundee & Arbroath Railway was joint between the North British Railway and the Caledonian Railway, which used it to run through trains from Dundee to Forfar, with connections to Aberdeen. This Arbroath station was the Joint line's largest and finest. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
