Scope and Content Kinning Park Sewage Pumping Station, No 100 Seaward Street, Glasgow This pumping station was built as part of a southern intercepting sewer gathering the flow from sewers which had previously run straight into the Clyde, and taking it down to a new sewage treatment plant at Shieldhall. The station lifts the sewage flowing from the east so that it can flow by gravity to Shieldhall. This shows the building from the south-east, looking along Milnpark Street. It was designed to house unusually tall steam pumping engines, hence its height. It was designed by D and A Home Morton, and built in 1909-10. It was electrified in the 1930s. The station is still in use, fulfilling its original function. The Shieldhall works was designed to use chemical precipitation as part of its purification regime, producing a sludge which was dumped at sea. This practice is no longer acceptable and in 2002 no effective alternative was yet in place. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
