Scope and Content West Street Underground Station, Glasgow West Street was built as part of the Glasgow District Subway Co's circular cable-worked underground system, opened in 1896. Like all the original stations it had an underground island platform reached by stairs from a ticket office on the surface. This was one of the two that had a surface building. This shows the surface building from the west, The entrance to the ticket office and underground platform is under the sign. This surface building may have been designed by James Miller, architect, who designed the St Enoch station. The Subway company was taken over by Glasgow Corporation in 1923. The system was electrified in 1935 as the Underground. It was completely rebuilt in the mid 1970s, and this building was demolished, though the station remains open.
