Scope and Content St Enoch Station (St Enoch Square), Glasgow St Enoch was Glasgow's first large city-centre railway station, built for the Glasgow and South Western Railway. A temporary terminus at Dunlop Street was opened in 1870. The St Enoch Station was completed in 1876, and its integral hotel in 1879. The station was extended to the south in 1898-1902. This shows the site of the platforms from the east, with the 1870-76 iron train shed on the right, and steel-framed awnings, probably part of the 1898-1902 works, on the left. The 1870-76 train shed was designed by John Fowler and James F Blair, engineers. This station was built partly because the Glasgow and South Western formed a partnership with the Midland Railway to run Anglo-Scottish services via the Midland's Settle and Carlisle line. These services ended in the mid 1960s. St Enoch was demolished in the early 1970s and replaced by a shopping centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
