Scope and Content Paint Warehouses, Nos 104-118 Tradeston Street, Glasgow This store was built in 1900 for Blacklock & McArthur, paint, colour and varnish manufacturers, oil merchants and refiners, whose works were further north in Tradeston Street. The 1900 brick building, in Venetian Gothic style, was designed by W F McGibbon in 1896. This shows the building from the south-east, with Tradeston Street on the right, and Cook Street on the left. The corner tower houses a water tank supplying a sprinkler system for fire control, as most paints and varnishes are highly inflammable. The buildings on the left were also originally paint mills. Blacklock & McArthur were one of the largest firms of paint makers in Glasgow, with an extensive export trade. By the 1960s they had been absorbed into Imperial Chemical Industries' Paints Division. The store was still there in 2002. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
