Scope and Content Bowling Harbour, Forth & Clyde Canal, West Dunbartonshire This harbour seems to have been formed in 1848, when the Caledonian and Dumbartonshire Railway was opened as an isolated line from Bowling to Balloch via Dumbarton. The harbour was built to allow interchange of goods between sea-going vessels and both the railway and the Forth and Clyde Canal. This shows the harbour from its east end, looking west. The wood-piled features on the left are the remains of a full-length wooden quay. The concrete quay on the right was probably built in about 1896 by the Caledonian Railway, who owned both canal and harbour. The heyday of the harbour appears to have been in the late 19th century, and thereafter it was used mainly for laying up Clyde pleasure steamers during the winter, and for coasters, including coastal tankers. As can be seen, by 1970 it was little used, and by 2002 it was largely derelict. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
