Scope and Content Warehouse (Offices), Nos 11-14 Maritime Street, Leith, Edinburgh The block of buildings between Maritime Street (formerly Quality Street) and Water Street was developed in the late 19th century to provide warehouses and offices for firms engaged in the wine and spirit trades. This is one of three large blocks of offices and warehouses in Maritime Street built at that time. This shows the building from the south-east. It was built in 1898, to designs by James Simpson. On the left is part of another block, Nos 7-8 Maritime Street, built in 1893-95 and also designed by James Simpson. In the distance is a large warehouse, Nos 18-20 Maritime Street. This block was occupied in 1937 by the Bonding and Transport Co Ltd, storekeepers and bonded warehousemen, and two other firms, but the architectural treatment, with a head of Bacchus wreathed in bunches of grapes, suggests that it was built for more prestigious owners.
