Scope and Content Leith Central Station, Edinburgh This station was built by the North British Railway to serve the port of Leith, and opened in 1903. It provided a rapid service to Waverley Station, and was also used as a terminus for through services from the west, relieving pressure on the newly-rebuilt Waverley. This shows the main entrance to the station from the west. The train shed's steel-framed ridge and furrow roof can be seen above the screen wall The platforms are at first-floor level, and the station offices were in the first floor of the street-frontage block to the left. The electrification of Edinburgh's street tramways in the early 1920s seriously affected the traffic at this station, which was under-used for many years, and closed in 1950. In 1955 it was converted into a maintenance depot for diesel locomotives and trains. It was demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
