Scope and Content Gleneagles Brewery & Maltings, Blackford, Perth & Kinross Blackford was a centre of brewing from an early date, as the water from the local hills was well suited for brewing, and the farmland in the locality was well suited for growing malting barley. The largest brewery was rebuilt in about 1887 for R and D Sharp, to designs by Russell and Spence, architects, Glasgow. This shows the maltings of the brewery, built in 1896-98, from the north-west. The building is situated in a court behind the brewery. The three lower floors were used for malting, with the barley loft on the top floor. The kiln is at the far end, with the malt deposit beyond. By 1970 the brewery had been closed for several years, though the brewhouse and associated buildings were still largely intact. The maltings was still in use, in the ownership of Simpsons Ltd, and remained so for a number of years. In the 1980s it was converted into flats. The brewery has been demolished.
