Scope and Content Bleach & Dye Works (Huntingtower Bleachworks), Huntingtowerfield, Perth & Kinross This works was founded in about 1775 to bleach linen cloth at a time when the manufacture of linen in Scotland, and its bleaching, were being actively encouraged by the United Kingdom. It became one of the largest bleachworks in Scotland, latterly bleaching cotton cloth. This shows part of the works from the north-west, with the millpond storing water from the river Almond, originally for power as well as process water, but by 1970 only for the latter. The chimney supplied draught for the boiler house. Bleachworks used much steam and hot water. This works originally had workshops where the cloth was boiled with chemicals to remove earthy and oily impurities. It was then spread out in fields for the sun to complete the bleaching process. Later it became possible to carry out the whole process indoors. This works closed in 1982 and has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
