Scope and Content Station, Station Square, Lockerbie, Dumfries and Galloway This station was opened in 1848 by the Caledonian Railway as a major through station on the company's main line from Carlisle to Glasgow and Edinburgh. The station buildings were designed by Andrew Heiton of Perth, who was also responsible for designing other stations on the line. This shows the building on the south-bound platform. The masonry building is Heiton's, and the awning, with its cast iron columns is a later 19th century addition. To the right is a locomotive shed, probably added in 1863 when a branch to Dumfries was opened. When the West Coast main line was electrified in the early1970s Lockerbie Station lost the heavy awning on the north-bound platform, which was replaced by a much smaller and simpler one, and the building on the south-bound platform, in favour of a very modest shelter. The main Tite building survives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
