Scope and Content Pooley weighing machine near north corner of duty free warehouses, Aberfeldy Distillery, Aberfeldy, Perth & Kinross Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1896 by the brothers John and Thomas Dewar to produce whisky suitable for blending. It was owned by the Distillers Company Ltd from 1925 and Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd from 1930 before being substantially modernised 1972-3 for John Dewar & Sons Ltd. The site boasted a direct rail link to Dewar's warehouses in Perth until the 1960s. This weighing machine with its ornate cast iron details would have probably been used to check supplies of malt arriving at the distillery. Behind it can be seen the pagoda-roofed kiln building, designed to ventilate malted barley drying above peat fires. The duty free warehouses are used to store maturing casks of whisky. This distillery no longer carries out its own malting, relying instead on supplies from the Glenesk Maltings, Montrose. The malt kiln building is now used for producing pot ale syrup, a type of high-protein cattle feed made from a by-product of the first stage of distillation called the 'lees'.
