Scope and Content Former maltings and kiln, mill room, mash house, boiler house and still house, Aberfeldy Distillery, Aberfeldy, Perth & Kinross Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1896 by the brothers John and Thomas Dewar to produce whisky suitable for blending. It was owned by the Distillers Company Ltd from 1925 and Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd from 1930 before being substantially modernised 1972-3 for John Dewar & Sons Ltd. The site boasted a direct rail link to Dewar's warehouses in Perth until the 1960s. This shows the range of distillery buildings, each representing a different part of the whisky-making process. From left to right they are: the former maltings and kiln where barley is soaked, germinated and dried above a peat fire ventilated by the distinctive pagoda roof; the mill room where the dried malt is crushed, and the mash house where fermentation begins. The modern buildings (right) contain the boiler house (with tall brick chimney behind) and stills (huge pear-shaped copper vessels) where the spirit is distilled. The unmatured whisky is then left to age for at least three years in wooden casks before bottling as Scotch whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
