Scope and Content Former kiln and maltings from south-east, Aberfeldy Distillery, Aberfeldy, Perth & Kinross Aberfeldy Distillery was founded in 1896 by the brothers John and Thomas Dewar to produce whisky suitable for blending. It was owned by the Distillers Company Ltd from 1925 and Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd from 1930 before being substantially modernised 1972-3 for John Dewar & Sons Ltd. The site boasted a direct rail link to Dewar's warehouses in Perth until the 1960s. This shows the former maltings where barley was soaked before being spread out on the floor and turned regularly until germination occurs. The grains are then dried in a kiln above peat fires, ventilated by the building's distinctive pagoda roof. The peat smoke helps to give the finished whisky its flavour. This distillery no longer carries out its own malting, relying instead on supplies from the Glenesk Maltings, Montrose. The malt kiln building is now used for producing 'pot ale syrup', a type of high-protein cattle feed made from a by-product of the first stage of distillation called the 'lees'.
