Scope and Content Distillery offices from east, Aberlour Glenlivet Distillery, Charlestown of Aberlour, Moray Aberlour Glenlivet Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Gordon. It stands next to the Burn of Aberlour, which powered the machinery without the need for steam power. The main buildings were rebuilt by James Fleming Junior in 1879-80, and rebuilt again in 1898 after a fire. Four new stills were added in 1973. This shows the distillery offices, built in 1897. A carved sign in the gable ends proudly records the company's ownership of the premises. The ornate office building features a variety of smooth and roughly-cut stonework, ridge tiles, finials and a tower with a tiled conical roof. This attractive and elaborate office building was designed to impress visitors to the distillery by reflecting the wealth and modernity of the business. Today, visitor centres are provided at most large distilleries to cater for the large numbers of tourists and enthusiasts completing 'whisky trails' and tasting tours.
