Scope and Content Duty free warehouse No 1 from south-east, Balmenach Distillery, Highland Balmenach Distillery was formally established in 1824, when legend has it James Macgregor was visited by an exciseman who advised him to 'take out a license on yon peat shed' in which he had been illicitly distilling whisky. Like most distilleries it has been renovated and has changed hands several times in the course of its history, before being 'mothballed' in 1993. It was acquired by Inver House Distillers in 1997, and is now once more in use. This shows the duty free warehouse with a row of large empty barrels outside. The warehouse is built from stone rubble with a corbelled corner section, and has bars at its windows to protect the valuable contents within. Inside, the floor is of beaten earth to keep the casks cool and moist during maturation for between three and 20 years. Balmenach whisky has remained popular despite the changing fortunes of the distillery itself. In the 19th century it was exported to the colonies, and even sampled by Queen Victoria herself when she was staying at the Gairloch Hotel by Loch Maree. It has been used to form part of the Johnnie Walker Blend and released as a single malt in selective bottlings. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
