Scope and Content Straw conveyor in roof of straw barn, Crackaig Farm, Highland Crackaig Farm, on the eastern shore of Sutherland, is part of the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. In the 1790s the estate undertook a sustained programme of agricultural improvement which replaced the old system of subsistence farming and the way of life that went with it. This shows the straw conveyor which brought the straw into the barn after it had been separated from the grain in the threshing machine. In 1858 Crackaig was described as one of the 'great coast side arable farms' of which most, if not all, of the farm buildings had recently been renewed. The era of agricultural improvement, begun in the late 18th century, introduced greater mechanisation to farming. The design and construction of new farm buildings reflected a more commercial approach to farming as an industry to provide food for a growing population, both rural and urban.
