Scope and Content Station Platform, Gourock Pier Railway Station, Kempock Point, Gourock, Inverclyde (now demolished) Gourock Pier Railway Station, considered to be the most advanced railway pier of its time, was designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, and built in 1889 as a major railway steamer interchange for the Caledonian Railway Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the station in 1890. The platform had slim iron columns supporting arched iron girders which, in turn, supported a saw-tooth glass roof. Above the railway line was an elegant wooden valence, in the Caledonian Railway Company's own design and colours, to help protect waiting passengers from the steam, smoke and dirt from engines entering the station. The sign 'To The Steamers' directed passengers to the steam boats waiting at the quayside. The company catered for day trippers and holidaymakers who wished to venture 'doon the water' to Helensburgh, Rothesay, Dunoon and other seaside resorts on the Firth of Clyde. This hugely popular activity in the late 19th century required rail/steamer terminal buildings adequate to cope with the huge volume of passengers at the height of the summer season, and easy access from the trains to the paddle steamers.
