Scope and Content Section of Railway Line, Greenock to Gourock Railway, Greenock, Inverclyde The Greenock to Gourock Railway, built by the Caledonian Railway Company in order to connect their rail terminal at Greenock with their new railway steamer interchange at Gourock Pier, Kempock Point, was completed in 1889. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the line in 1890. This section of standard gauge railway track cuts through a steep embankment on the approach to a tunnel. Running along the left-hand side of the track is the point rodding which controls the points, the intersection in the rails which moves the train onto a new stretch of track. The mechanically operated trackside signal at the entrance to the tunnel (right) tells the train driver how fast to go and when to stop. The Caledonian Railway Company's rail extension from Greenock to Gourock was a costly one to make. The railway could not be taken round the built-up coastline between the two ports, and had to be driven under the town of Greenock in the longest railway tunnel in Scotland. In 1889 the job was completed at a total cost of £600,000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
