Scope and Content Pier, Gourock Pier Railway Station, Kempock Point, Gourock, Inverclyde (now demolished) Gourock Pier Railway Station, considered to be the most advanced railway pier of its time, was designed by the Glasgow architect, James Miller, and built in 1889 as a major railway steamer interchange for the Caledonian Railway Company. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the station and pier in 1890. This photograph shows the site still under construction. Beyond the retaining bank, the engine and carriages (left) belong to the building contractors and were used to transport heavy construction materials. Miller's long pier, built with wood-pile foundations, allowed several steam vessels to draw up at the quayside, parallel to the trains, at the same time. Miller's new pier at Gourock was considered a masterpiece. It was bigger than its rival, Princes Pier, Greenock, closer to the principal Clyde resorts, and express trains could run directly from Glasgow to the gangways. The Caledonian Railway Company also launched its own steam packet company, with four vessels for ready for service when the first train steamed into Gourock on 1st June 1889.
