Scope and Content Late 19th-century view of the Organ and University Stalls, South Transept, St Giles' Cathedral, High Street, Edinburgh St Giles' Cathedral, the historical High Kirk of Edinburgh, dates from the late 14th century although some evidence remains of an earlier 12th-century church on the site. It was damaged and altered in the 16th century after the Reformation, and remodelled in the early 19th century before being restored in 1871-83 to much of its former glory. The interior was photographed in 1895 by the architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The organ, constructed in 1883 by Ingram & Company, was much enlarged in 1890. It occupies the whole of the south transept, and is surmounted by semicircular towers of organ pipes topped by open crowns. In front of the organ are the university stalls, used by members of Edinburgh University for special services. Music at St Giles' has always played an important role. When St Giles'[ became a collegiate church in 1467, there was not only a Minister of Choir, who was master of the Song School and also responsible for the provision of wax for the high altar and oil for the lamps, but also a Sacristan who was responsible for attending to the bells and a small organ.
