Scope and Content St Paul's Church, Newark Street, Finnart, Greenock, Inverclyde, from the south-east (now Finnart St Paul's Church of Scotland) St Paul's Church, Greenock, a finely detailed red sandstone church, was designed in 1893 in a late Gothic style by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The church was photographed shortly after it was completed in 1894 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The church has a long, high nave (left) and a short chancel, lower than the nave (right), at its east end. The nave is divided into six bays, five of which open into a narrow, windowless aisle on each side which serves only as a passage. The east gable (right), with a splendid traceried window, is flanked by buttressed pinnacles terminating with crocketed spires. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) was born in Edinburgh, and became one of Scotland's leading architects at the end of the 19th century. He worked in many styles from Gothic to Classical, and his celebrated public buildings include the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, McEwan Hall and University Medical School in Edinburgh. He was knighted in 1902. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
