Scope and Content St Paul's Church, Newark Street, Finnart, Greenock, Inverclyde, from the south-west (now Finnart St Paul's Church of Scotland) St Paul's Church, Greenock, a finely detailed red sandstone church, was designed in 1893 in a late Gothic style by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The church was photographed shortly after it was completed in 1894 by the distinguished architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere. The church has a long, six-bayed nave with lean-to windowless aisles and large, pointed clerestory windows which flood the interior with natural light. At the west end of the nave (left) is a side porch which gives access to the gallery. The west front (far left) contains the main entrance and a splendid eight-light traceried window. The congregation of St Paul's originally worshipped in a small iron-framed church (known as the 'iron' church) in Newark Street. In the late 1880s they decided to erect a permanent building on the corner of Newark and Bentinck Streets, choosing Anderson, whose reputation with ecclesiastical commissions was assured, as architect.
