Scope and Content Centre stand, Hibernian Football Club, Easter Road Stadium, Albion Road, Edinburgh, from north-east Hibernian Football Club, also known as 'Hibs' or 'the Hi-bees', was formed in 1875 by Irish immigrants, and in 1880 it moved to the first of two sites it has occupied at Easter Road. Since the 1989 Hillsborough, Sheffield disaster in which 96 Liverpool football fans died, like most major clubs, Hibs has carried out major renovation work to improve safety standards and the comfort of fans. This shows the centre stand at the stadium. As part of the club's programme of renovation, this stand has now been demolished and a new west stand was opened in 2001. New north and south stands were completed in 1995 to make this an all-seated stadium in accordance with the Taylor Report recommendations. Football terracing, where spectators stood to watch the games, evolved during the Victorian era and had the advantage of enabling large crowds to watch matches. Easter Road still had terracing in January 1950 when it had its record gate of 65,840 spectators in a game against city rivals Hearts (Heart of Midlothian).
