Scope and Content Main entrance to Hibernian Football Club, Easter Road Stadium, Albion Road, Edinburgh, from west Hibernian Football Club, popularly known as 'Hibs' or 'the Hi-bees', was first formed by Irish immigrants in 1875. It moved to the first of its Easter Road sites in 1880 and has remained in the vicinity ever since. Its first stand, with 4,480 seats, was built on the west side of the stadium and was opened in 1924. This shows the main entrance to the stadium with the west or main stand behind. The free-standing floodlight gantry in the background was erected in 1954 by Miller & Stables of Edinburgh. This has all now been demolished and a new west stand constructed, which was opened in 2001. Hibs was among the first football clubs to construct free-standing floodlight gantries in 1954. The system was known as 'drenchlighting' and was first used at Easter Road in a game against city rivals Hearts (Heart of Midlothian) in 1954. Later, a new system was installed with floodlights sited on the roofs of the east and west stands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
