Scope and Content Chancel, Govan Parish Church, Nos 866-8 Govan Road, Glasgow Govan Parish Church, designed in 1883-8 in an Early Gothic style by the architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, stands within an ancient churchyard as the last of a long series of churches built on the site. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1909. The chancel, extended in 1908, is the great glory of the church. The east wall (centre) is modelled on the north transept of Pluscardine Priory near Elgin, and has three lancet windows with stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe. The communion table, organ case (right) and chairs were designed by Anderson and made by Whytock & Reid, Edinburgh. The sarcophagus (right) dates from the 9th or 10th century. The church has a remarkable collection of Early Christian carved stones dating from the 9th to the 11th century, most of which were moved inside from the churchyard. The sarcophagus, a single block of sandstone hollowed out to received the burial, has intricately carved figures and animals on the sides and ends, and may have been designed for King Constantine I, son of Kenneth MacAlpin, who reigned 862-77 AD.
