Scope and Content Fancy Goods Department, Jenners Department Store, Nos 47-52 Princes Street, Edinburgh Jenners Department Store, designed in 1893-5 by the architect, William Hamilton Beattie, was, when it opened in 1895, one of the largest department stores in Britain and one of the 'wonders of Edinburgh'. The architectural photographer, Harry Bedford Lemere, was commissioned to photograph the interior in 1895. The fancy goods department is lined with glass-fronted display cabinets containing a huge range of goods and a display of parasols (left). The table (right) is piled high with china dolls, yachts, miniature houses and picture frames, and the floor space offers a profusion of Oriental lacquered screens, doll's carriages and an assortment of rocking horses. The doll's carriage was a miniature wooden replica of a child's carriage, and designed as a toy for a child of a wealthy Victorian family. The rocking horse, a model of a horse on rockers or springs for a child to rock on, was also made from wood with a horsehair main and tail, and a leather saddle, stirrups and bridle.
