Scope and Content Main stand, St Johnstone Football Club, Muirton Park, Dunkeld Road, Perth, Perth & Kinross This shows the main stand at Muirton Park. Although called a 'stand' this was the only area of seating at football stadiums, with most spectators standing to watch the match in the 'terracing'. As seen here, it contained rows of fold-down wooden seats, all numbered to match ticket numbers. Following a series of disasters at football stadiums in the 1980s and 1990s, new regulations were brought into place which required teams in the English and Scottish premier divisions to become all-seated. This led to St Johnstone moving to their brand new stadium, and a supermarket was built on the site of Muirton Park. St Johnstone Football Club was founded in 1884 by members of the St Johnstone Cricket Club at Recreation Park in Perth. Muirton Park was the club's home from 1925 until 1989, when they moved to a new all-seater stadium at McDiarmid Park, on the outskirts of the city. The club's name derives from the old name for the city of Perth, 'St John's Toun'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
