Scope and Content Twin-cylinder engine, Tipperty Brick Works, Aberdeenshire The machinery at Tipperty Brick Works was all powered by this Ruston & Hornsby two-cylinder horizontal diesel engine. It powered the machinery in the plant by means of horizontal shafts, off which belt drives would take the power to the extruder which was used to form clay bricks, conveyors, and various other areas of the works. In all, there were four circular kilns at the works, all situated within a two-storeyed building. The spaces above the kilns were used as drying areas for the newly-extruded pipes, as well as several drying sheds. It also had three iron-bound cylindrical chimneys, a pug mill and extrusion plant, conveyors and other machinery. Tipperty Brick Works lies to the north-west of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire. Operating since before 1860, it dates mainly from the early 20th century, and produced mainly tile field drains. After closure in 1980, it was mostly demolished in 1981, although one large brick-built building and a tall chimney still survive. The site is now used as an industrial unit.
