Scope and Content Extruder and wire cutting machine, Tipperty Brick Works, Aberdeenshire This is the extruder machine used to form the clay field drains, which were then cut by the wires visible in the foreground. They were then stacked in the drying sheds or in warm rooms above the kilns to harden off prior to firing. This extruder machine, and most of the other machinery around the plant, were powered centrally from a Ruston & Hornsby two-cylinder horizontal diesel engine, which turned the shaft drives which stretched throughout the factory. Field drains were produced by Tipperty Brick Works from extruded clay mined from the nearby clay pit, which was connected to the works by a tramway. The kilns used were downdraught kilns, which, although sometimes inefficient, maintained uniform temperatures and were therefore able to produce higher quality wares than more sophisticated types of kiln. Tipperty Brick Works lies to the north-west of Newburgh in Aberdeenshire. Operating since before 1860, it dates mainly from the early 20th century, and produced mainly tile field drains. After closure in 1980, it was mostly demolished in 1981, although one large brick-built building and a tall chimney still survive. The site is now used as an industrial unit.
