Scope and Content Dairy, byre and feed store, Wester Kittochside Farm, South Lanarkshire, from south-south-west Wester Kittochside Farm is a rare example of a farm whose buildings span three centuries of agricultural change from the late 18th-century improvement period to modern times. Recent developments, however, have hardly touched it and the farm, gifted to The National Trust for Scotland in 1992 and now supporting the Museum of Scottish Country Life, is rare in having such intact examples of original buildings. This shows the dairy, byre and feed store from the south-south-west. This block makes up the east range and was probably built in the mid-19th century to accommodate more cows for increased dairy production. The byre housed 25 cows with Caithness stone partitions dividing their stalls. It remained a dairy farm until 1963 when the herd was sold. Further developments on the farm were always related to expanding the milk supply. During the 1930s, for certification of the herd, the milk house was rebuilt and in 1949 a Dutch barn with steel-framed columns and segmental roof was erected. Note the feed mixing box attached to the outside south wall (right). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
