Scope and Content Photographic copy of elevation and section of tower, Fladda Lighthouse, Fladda, Jura, Argyll & Bute This shows a section of the lighthouse, and plans of the lightroom floor, dry store floor and oil cellar (left), an elevation of the tower (centre), and a plan, elevation and detail of the parapet door. The tower does not include keeper accommodation, as this was provided in an adjacent cottage. The light on Fladda flashes white, red and green. The white light having a nominal range of 20km, the red and green of 17km. As the number of manned and unmanned lighthouses increased, a greater variety of lights and flashes were introduced to enable sailors to tell where they were, and to avoid confusion. Fladda Lighthouse was built on a rocky island close to Luing, near Jura in 1860. This small circular tower was designed by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87), and stands 13m tall, and 13m above mean high water. Nearby is a single-storeyed keepers' house. The lighthouse was automated in 1956. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
