Scope and Content Photographic copy of elevation and plan of flagpole, Fladda Lighthouse, Fladda, Jura, Argyll & Bute This shows an elevation and section of a wooden flagpole at the lighthouse. The base is strengthened with additional timbers to support the structure during high winds. The flagpole would be used for displaying signals to be observed by passing shipping and from the mainland. These would inform the shore stations when the keepers required fresh water, supplies or the services of a doctor. Fladda Lighthouse was built on a rocky island close to Luing, near Jura in 1860. This small circular tower was designed by engineers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87), and stands 13m tall, and 13m above mean high water. Nearby is a single-storeyed keeper's house. The lighthouse was automated in 1956. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
