Scope and Content General view from north, Seamount Court, Gallowgate Redevelopment, Aberdeen The Gallowgate II development was built in 1964 by the Housing Committee of Aberdeen Corporation, with W J Anderson as contractor. The site includes one 19-storeyed slab block containing 126 flats (Seamount Court), and one 9-storeyed slab block of 72 flats (Porthill Court). The blocks are linked by two enclosed bridges. This shows the taller of the two linked slab blocks which make up the development. A grid of concrete beams frames each flat, with glazed sections forming balconies, and recessed areas down the centre of the block indicating the position of the lifts and stairs. Tapering columns called 'pilotis' support the block up to first-floor level. Aberdeen began a multi-storey building programme after visits by its Housing Committee to schemes in Roehampton and Glasgow in 1959. Tower block developments like this one were seen as the answer to long waiting lists for housing in many cities in the 1960s and 1970s. This development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
