Scope and Content 1967 granary block from west, Meadowside Granary, Castlebank Street, Glasgow Meadowside Granary was built for the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1911-3, and further extended in 1936-7 and 1960-7. The 1960s section features grain silos flanked by two tall 'working houses' which contain stairs, machinery and lifts. The granaries closed in 1988 and the area is being redeveloped as Glasgow Harbour, a housing and retail development. This shows a vast expanse of brick cladding laid over reinforced concrete pillars, beams and floor slabs which makes up the west side of the granary complex. This section, built in 1967, continues the design of the adjacent 1960 block, with rows of windows on the lowest and highest floors, and open areas below the building for the unloading of grain into rail wagons. The tall tower with angular glass lookout section was used to monitor the unloading of grain cargoes from North American and northern Europe from the quayside. Pneumatic suction elevators and belt conveyors were installed for quick handling of goods. The 1960-7 section of this building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
