Scope and Content South frontage of 1960 granary block from west, Meadowside Granary, Castlebank Street, Glasgow Meadowside Granary was built for the Clyde Navigation Trust in 1911-3, and further extended in 1936-7 and 1960-7. The 1960s section features grain silos flanked by two tall 'working houses' which contain stairs, machinery and lifts. The granaries closed in 1988 and the area is being redeveloped as Glasgow Harbour, a housing and retail development. This shows the huge brick-faced granary block built in 1960 around a structure of reinforced concrete pillars, beams and floor slabs. The building rests on columns which allow rail tracks to pass underneath for loading. Rows of windows light the upper and lower levels and an amenities area is cantilevered out from the first and second floors. This section of the granary is almost 118m in length and reaches to a height of nine storeys in the 'working houses'. The building is situated near the quayside to allow pneumatic suction elevators and belt conveyors to transport grain from ships. The 1960-7 section of this building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
