Scope and Content St Mungo's Chapel from south, Linn Crematorium, Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow Linn Crematorium was built in 1964 to designs by Thomas C Cordiner & Partners. The complex contains large and small chapels, a room of remembrance, service block and long concrete cantilevered canopies over walkways on either side of the main building. This shows St Mungo's Chapel with its white marble catafalque (stand for a coffin) within a recessed area flanked by flowers. This is inscribed with a cross and the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, Alpha and Omega (which symbolise God as the 'beginning and the end'). Simple wooden pews stand on a wooden parquet floor, and the room is lit by high rows of windows. This large space is uncluttered and simple in design, creating a calm and respectful space for memorial services. The exterior is more expressive, with its sculptural reinforced concrete structures. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
