Scope and Content St Mungo's Chapel from north, Linn Crematorium, Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow Linn Crematorium was built in 1964 to designs by Thomas C Cordiner & Partners. The complex contains large and small chapels, a room of remembrance, service block and long concrete cantilevered canopies over walkways on either side of the main building. These shelter mourners arriving by public transport or walking in the Garden of Remembrance. This shows the interior of St Mungo's Chapel which can hold up to 310 mourners. Simple light fittings hang from the ceiling, which are supplemented by light from patterned blocks set with coloured glass on the back wall. Simple wooden pews face a 'sanctuary' area behind railings over a wooden parquet floor. The white marble catafalque (stand for a coffin), on the left, lowers the coffin down to the cremation area during the service. Simple furnishings and an airy, white interior coloured by light from the tinted glass in the wall, create a restrained uncluttered space for memorial services. Special care was taken in the design of the building to ensure that mourners using each chapel could arrive and depart in privacy. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
