Scope and Content Main chapel (St Mungo's) from south, Linn Crematorium, Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow Linn Crematorium was built in 1964 to designs by Thomas C Cordiner & Partners. The complex contains large and small chapels, a room of remembrance, service block and long concrete cantilevered canopies over walkways on either side of the main building. This shows St Mungo's Chapel with its concrete-framed central section set with glazed, patterned blocks. On either side can be seen the long, glazed walkways with their sheltering concrete roof supported on tapering legs. These are stepped in height down the hill through the landscaped grounds. Expressive use of concrete for the main building, the canopy over the main entrance, and the covered walkways combined with simple coloured glass decoration gives a sense of spirituality and calm to this modern structure. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
