Scope and Content Ward unit and operating suite from south, Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary, Major's Loan, Falkirk This building was designed 1961-3, and built 1963-6 to designs by architects Keppie, Henderson & Partners (in association with Scottish Home and Health Department and the Western Regional Hospital Board). The block is built around a reinforced concrete frame faced with brown brick and copper eaves panels. This shows the road leading to the entrance of the 1960s block, which is flanked by more recent structures. Each of the top-floor windows features a panel of copper extending down from the roof, which links the upper floor visually to the eaves. The windows are distributed across the wall either singly, in twos on the projecting section (left) or in threes. This hospital was designed to assess a new idea in hospital design, that of the 'racetrack' or 'deep' plan. This created a continuous corridor around small wards, mostly containing only four beds for added privacy. This layout proved successful and was later used for many tower block-style hospital buildings. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
