Scope and Content Ward unit and operating suite from north-east, Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary, Major's Loan, Falkirk This building was designed 1961-3, and built 1963-6 to designs by architects Keppie, Henderson & Partners (in association with Scottish Home and Health Department and the Western Regional Hospital Board). The block is built around a reinforced concrete frame faced with brown brick and copper eaves panels. This shows the three-storeyed, flat-roofed block faced with beige tiles, bricks and copper-clad eaves. A row of columns up to first-floor level support the wall (right). Above can be seen two oriel windows (projecting bays from an upper floor) clad in green which light the day rooms within. A recessed section of wall (left) adds interest to the design. This hospital was designed to assess a new idea in hospital design, that of the 'racetrack' or 'deep' plan. This created a continuous corridor around small wards, mostly containing only four beds for added privacy. This layout proved successful and was later used for many tower block-style hospital buildings. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
