Scope and Content Ward 9C on first floor of ward unit and operating suite, Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary, Major's Loan, Falkirk This building was designed 1961-3, and built 1963-6 to designs by architects Keppie, Henderson & Partners (in association with Scottish Home and Health Department and the Western Regional Hospital Board). Its innovative design includes a 'racetrack' plan of continuous corridors around small four-person wards and treatment rooms. This shows the nurses' station in the corridor between the wards and treatment rooms. The floors are covered in hard-wearing lino, and the walls have plastic panels to protect the paintwork from passing trolleys and beds. A patients' day room can be seen through the doorway in the distance, and a double-sided clock hangs from the ceiling. After this unit was completed the staff kept detailed diaries for a year detailing the amount of use the various areas received, and noting their opinions of the layout of the building for everyday use. The design proved successful and went on to be copied in many tower block-style hospitals. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
