Scope and Content North block from north-west, Glasgow College of Building and Printing, North Hanover Street, Glasgow The Glasgow College of Building and Printing and the Central College of Commerce were commissioned in 1960 and built 1960-4 by architects Wylie, Shanks & Underwood. The College of Building and Printing teaches design, printing and publishing, furniture and creative crafts, building and the environment, photography and television, and computing and media. This shows a single-storeyed block adjacent to the main 13-storeyed teaching block. This part of the college includes a gymnasium and assembly hall. The glass wall topped by a stone-clad upper section echoes the design of the slab block behind. Steps lead down to allow access on the sloping site. This building was constructed at a time when the teaching of trades and skills was becoming more important, and this modern, purpose-built structure reflects this change in attitudes. This college building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
